US calls on Europe to join in increasing pressure on Russia

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Washington is ready to expand sanctions pressure on Russia, but this effect can only be achieved through joint action with the European Union.
He said this in an interview with NBC News.
Bessent said US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance had a “very productive” conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on September 5. She then discussed possible joint US-EU steps with the finance minister.
“We are ready to increase pressure on Russia, but we need our European partners to imitate us,” Bessent emphasized.
He stressed that additional sanctions and secondary tariffs against countries buying Russian oil could lead to a “complete collapse” of the Russian economy and force Vladimir Putin to sit down at the negotiating table.
Let us recall that the United States once again threatened Russia with sanctions if the Kremlin does not move towards a peaceful settlement.
By the way, the European Union is working on the next, 19th, package of sanctions aimed at increasing economic pressure on the Russian military-industrial complex.
