US Congressmen Call on Trump to Apply the “Graham Act” Against Russia

A group of US congressmen from both major parties has called on President Donald Trump to strengthen sanctions against Russia and apply the “Graham Act”.

This is stated in a letter from four lawmakers from the Ukraine Support Group in the US Congress.

Marcy Kaptur, Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Quigley, and Joe Wilson appealed to Trump, urging the White House not to ease sanctions against Russia and to continue economic pressure on Moscow.

The congressmen appealed to the president after media reports that his administration may reach an agreement with Moscow to release political prisoners in exchange for easing sanctions and restoring economic relations with Russia.

The authors of the letter opposed such a move. In their opinion, easing sanctions would only strengthen the Kremlin’s position and could lead to a prolongation of the war.

Congressmen emphasized that the United States should continue to pressure Russia while it wages war against Ukraine and poses threats to Washington’s European allies.

Separately, they called on Trump to implement sanctions under the “Graham Act.” The US president is due to announce restrictions against Russia by October 18.

The congressmen expect the Trump administration to introduce the first package of new sanctions by that deadline. They also urged the White House not to delay increasing economic pressure on Moscow.

“We urge the administration to act immediately to increase economic pressure on Russia. Peace in Europe can only be achieved by force,” the authors of the letter stated.

Recall, earlier “Pryamiy” wrote that Donald Trump signed a law on strengthening sanctions against Russia and Iran . The document expanded Washington’s sanction and tariff powers against both countries.
