The US federal government will officially shut down at midnight on October 1st after attempts to extend funding for the new fiscal year failed due to deep divisions between Democrats and Republicans in Congress.
This is reported by CNN and Bloomberg .
On Tuesday, an attempt to pass a temporary resolution to extend funding until November 21 failed. It needed 60 votes out of 100 to pass, but only 55 senators voted in favor, while 45 voted against. By the way, two Democrats supported the Republicans, while one Republican voted against it.
At the same time, the Senate rejected the alternative version from the Democratic minority. Thus, neither piece of legislation was supported.
Democrats insist on continuing the Affordable Care Act, introduced during the pandemic.
Republicans have not yet agreed to such conditions, although they have stated their willingness to negotiate.
The White House has already activated government shutdown protocols. According to estimates by the Congressional Budget Office, about 750,000 government employees could be placed on unpaid leave.
President Donald Trump said the shutdown could be an opportunity to cut government spending and social programs, but he blamed Democrats for the failure of the talks.
The situation is in limbo — and if Congress does not find a compromise soon, it could significantly affect the work of state institutions and stability in the United States.
By the way, global gold prices continue to rise: the precious metal’s value has exceeded $3,860 per ounce, setting a new record. The reason for this jump was investor concerns about a possible US government shutdown, which creates additional uncertainty in financial markets.
