Military exercises are taking place in Germany with the participation of Polish special operations forces, organized by the US Army. The American military is practicing modern drone tactics with allies, in particular, taking into account Ukraine’s experience in the war against Russia.
The Associated Press writes about this.
According to the exercise scenario, the Polish military must break through enemy positions, advance several miles into enemy-controlled territory, and use a drone to destroy an important facility.
“We are using the lessons learned by Ukraine. We are trying to recreate all the challenges that we see Russia or Ukraine facing,” said an officer of the American Green Berets.
The maneuvers take place in the Bavarian countryside, covering an area of about 3,000 square kilometers, and last for several days.
The American military uses drones to try to locate Polish special forces. If they succeed, the Polish unit has to repel a large-scale simulated attack.
The US may also bring in military police with service dogs and additional UAVs to search for the soldiers. In previous phases of the exercises, the Americans used more than 100 drones.
According to the AP, such maneuvers could be held several times a year. The American military expects that other NATO countries will also want to join them.
The exercises also demonstrate how the U.S. military and its allies are adapting to the new role of drones on the battlefield. Some of the tactics currently being practiced by the military are being actively used by Ukraine in its war against Russia.
The maneuvers come amid discussions about the future US military presence in Europe. The administration of President Donald Trump has previously allowed for a reduction in the American contingent in the region.
It was previously reported that former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said he was willing to help the United States create an “army of drones” in exchange for American Patriot interceptor missiles. According to him, Ukraine needs them to strengthen its air defenses ahead of winter.
