Thousands of Americans across the country walked out of their workplaces and schools on Tuesday, January 20, to take part in a massive protest against the policies of the Donald Trump administration. The mass action, dubbed “Free America,” is timed to coincide with the first anniversary of Trump’s second inauguration as president.
This is reported by Time.
Protesters are protesting a number of White House decisions: mass raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the involvement of the National Guard in domestic operations, and restrictions on the rights of transgender people. Organizers of the action called the strike a “refusal to cooperate with the regime” and a form of protest against the “escalation of the fascist threat.”
The Women’s March platform joined the action, which released footage of demonstrations from different parts of the country. In Washington and New York, columns of protesters with “Free America” posters filled the streets. In Minnesota, despite the frost, activists honored the memory of the deceased Renee Goode and protested against the methods of ICE agents. Even in traditionally conservative “red” states, rallies were held, where local activists declared the creation of “real resistance.”
Participants emphasize that the main goal of the protest is to show the uncontrollability of society in the face of policies that they consider anti-democratic.
“This is not just a request, this is a break with the usual state of affairs,” the activists noted, calling on Congress to intervene and respond to the situation.
