United States Tightens the Screws: Sanctions on Russian Oil Renewed

The US easing of sanctions against Russia expired a few days ago, so restrictions on Russian oil have resumed.

Ukraine supported the United States’ decision not to extend the sanctions exemption for Russia.

“Reducing Russia’s oil and gas revenues is a key tool in advancing peace efforts,” stressed Presidential Sanctions Commissioner Vladyslav Vlasyuk.

Commenting on the easing, Daniel Fried, former assistant secretary of state for European affairs, called Donald Trump’s decision as US president “unwise.”

The White House could require Russia to keep its oil revenues in a special account that would be used only for food and medicine, he said. It would also be worth lowering the oil price ceiling, thereby reducing the Kremlin’s revenues, Fried explained.

“Solving the problem of oil access without maximizing Russia’s profits from that oil was two perfectly reasonable steps, and the Trump administration did neither of them,” he concluded.

It was previously reported that the US is preparing to continue easing sanctions on Russian oil in the near future.

As a reminder, the US has eased sanctions for 30 days and allowed the purchase of Russian oil and petroleum products that are already being transported by sea. This exemption applies only to raw materials on tankers en route.

As is known, amid the escalation of the conflict over Iran and disruptions to oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, Russian budget revenues have increased sharply. According to analysts, additional revenue could reach up to $150 million per day.
