In February 2025, on the eve of the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while preparing a draft UN resolution, the United States secretly coordinated it with the Russian Federation.
This was reported by Le Monde.
It is noted that Ukraine had prepared a resolution at the time condemning Russian aggression and demanding the withdrawal of its army from Ukrainian territory. However, concerned about the decline in support, European officials recommended changing the wording to ensure broader support.
On February 21, shortly before the vote, in a conversation with the French and British ambassadors, US Chargé d’Affaires ai to the UN Dorothy Shea noted that the United States was demanding the withdrawal of the Ukrainian draft resolution. Instead, they would propose their own version and were counting on support.
When asked what the American project entails, Xi replied: “Peace, not war.”
“What is this, a Russian-American initiative?” commented French Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere.
It later became known that the US, hiding it from its allies, was discussing a draft American resolution with Russia.
Subsequently, European representatives organized an urgent meeting, at which they decided to leave the Ukrainian document unchanged.
At the same time, diplomats decided that the United Kingdom would confront the United States in the UN Security Council, and France in the General Assembly.
Then the General Assembly adopted the Ukrainian resolution without changes, and the American one, making amendments to it.
As reported, the United States of America promoted a UN resolution that equates the actions of Ukraine and Russia . It competed with a resolution condemning the Russian aggression.
As a reminder, on February 24, the United Nations General Assembly supported a collective resolution on Ukraine . At the same time, they also supported a resolution by the United States, which does not list Russia as an aggressor country.
