Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Trump’s decision actually helps the Russian economy and benefits Putin. He also stressed that easing sanctions is not in the interests of Americans.
Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas also criticized the president’s decision, saying that Trump signed an executive order exempting Russia from the sanctions law.
Democratic Senator Jeanne Shagin stressed that Congress has spoken out in favor of increasing pressure on Russia. According to her, Ukraine is fighting for survival, while Russian forces continue to attack Ukrainian cities with ballistic missiles.
Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said Congress passed a sweeping sanctions bill against Russia with broad bipartisan support to end the war in Ukraine, but he said Trump has once again caved in to the Kremlin.
Senator Richard Blumenthal accused the Trump administration of pressuring Ukraine and urged the president to cancel the diesel deal and continue supporting Ukraine. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto also criticized the administration’s decision, saying it undermines support from U.S. allies.
Similar statements were made among members of the US House of Representatives.
Democrat Don Baer argues that Trump has lifted the sanctions against Russia under the Graham Act. He has called on Congress to change the law to limit the president’s ability to unilaterally ease sanctions.
Congressman Suhas Subramanian said Trump’s actions undermine Congress’s authority and allow Putin to avoid accountability. He called for a return to Washington and tougher sanctions against Russia.
Congressman Mike Quigley reported on work to ensure compliance with US sanctions obligations against Russia. His colleague Bill Keating urged Republicans to consider a bill that would strengthen Congressional oversight of sanctions and prevent the president from lifting them without the input of lawmakers.
Democrat Ami Bera said the diesel deal could provide Russia with additional funds to wage war against Ukraine without guaranteeing a significant reduction in fuel prices in the U.S. He said he and 17 colleagues have introduced a bipartisan bill to block the deal.
Republican Don Bacon also expressed criticism. According to him , the president’s actions are prolonging the war, not contributing to its end.
Recall, US President Donald Trump refused to apply sanctions against Russia , provided for by the Graham-Blumenthal Act.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reacted to US President Donald Trump’s decision not to impose restrictions on Russia under Senator Lindsey Graham’s bill . He believes that easing sanctions could give Vladimir Putin a sense of support and will not help end the war.
Subsequently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that on October 16 and 17, the Russians had struck more than 15 important power generation and transmission facilities in various regions of Ukraine. Against this background, he thanked European partners for the next aid packages, and also sadly recalled the decision “to completely ignore the Lindsey Graham law, which was supposed to put really effective pressure on Russia to end this war.”
