US Senator Richard Blumenthal has spoken out against the supply of Russian diesel fuel to the US, which was allowed by the Donald Trump administration. He warned shipping companies of possible legal consequences and urged them to abandon the shipments.
Blumenthal wrote about this on the social network X.
In particular, the senator appealed to the Greek shipping company EASTMED, whose tanker left the Russian port with 40,000 tons of diesel on October 22. According to the plan, the ship is scheduled to arrive at the port of New York and New Jersey on November 7.
Blumenthal is demanding that the company turn around the tanker and stop transporting Russian fuel to the United States.
The senator recalled that in 2022, Congress passed a law banning the import of Russian energy resources, which was signed by then-President Joe Biden. In his opinion, the US Treasury Department license, which was issued after Trump’s agreements with Putin, cannot repeal this ban.
Blumenthal also requires EASTMED to name all participants in the supply, including the seller, buyer, insurer, and the company that arranged the transportation.
The senator previously made similar demands to American banks, fuel companies, and ports.
Thus, Blumenthal questions the legality of supplying Russian diesel to the United States, despite the Trump administration’s permission.
