Several hundred US Special Forces troops have arrived in the Middle East, where they have joined US Marines and paratroopers.
This was reported in The New York Times.
The troops sent include Army Rangers and Navy SEALs. Their deployment is intended to give US President Donald Trump additional options for escalating the war with Iran.
However, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the military currently has no specific mission in the Middle East.
As noted, American Special Forces can be used to protect the Strait of Hormuz, which is effectively blocked by Iran.
Otherwise, the military could be deployed to attempt to capture Kharg Island, Iran’s oil hub in the northern Persian Gulf, or to carry out missions against highly enriched uranium facilities in Isfahan.
The Special Forces units joined 2,500 Marines and another 2,500 sailors who recently arrived in the region.
In total, there are now more than 50,000 American military personnel in the Middle East — 10,000 more than were usually in the region.
However, military experts say that this number of personnel would be insufficient for any major ground operation. For example, Israel used more than 300,000 troops to conduct operations in the Gaza Strip, and the US-led coalition that invaded Iraq in 2003 initially had about 250,000 soldiers.
As a reminder, on February 28, the United States launched a military campaign in Iran . As US Vice President J.D. Vance said, the main goal of the United States in relation to Iran is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons .
As is known, the US is considering the possibility of conducting limited ground operations against Iran , but there is no final decision on the deployment of troops.
It is worth noting that Iran rejected a United States proposal with potential conditions to end the war in the Middle East.
