The US government shutdown could delay the delivery of American weapons to Ukraine. Ukrainian government sources confirmed that the shutdown of federal agencies has already affected negotiations on defense cooperation.
This is reported by The Telegraph.
According to journalists, a Ukrainian delegation arrived in Washington on Tuesday for meetings at the White House. The main goal was to conclude an agreement on the sale of Ukrainian drone technology to the United States.
However, the negotiations were in danger of breaking down as federal employees were placed on furlough due to the shutdown.
“All future projects have suffered damage. I don’t see how they will continue. The main problem is that we have a lot of discussions about future arms supplies. All future projects have suffered some damage because representatives of the Pentagon, the State Department, and the White House are not holding meetings, and we are losing time because of this shutdown,” the publication’s sources in the Ukrainian government told the publication.
It is also reported that other Ukrainian delegations that were planning trips to the US in the coming weeks are now “reconsidering their plans” due to the uncertainty of the situation.
As a reminder, the US federal government will officially shut down at midnight on October 1. The reason is the failure of attempts to extend funding for the new budget year due to deep disputes between Democrats and Republicans in Congress.
By the way, several planned meetings of the Ukrainian delegation with representatives of the American authorities have already been disrupted this week : US officials were asked to “stay home.”
As reported, a delegation from the National Security and Defense Council and the Ministry of Defense visited the United States to hold technical negotiations on signing an agreement to purchase Ukrainian drones.
