The US State Department has approved the possible sale of equipment to Ukraine for the development and modernization of air defense for a total amount of about $2.68 billion.

This is stated in a statement from the State Department.

According to the report, the government of Ukraine has submitted a request for the acquisition of the following weapons, which do not fall into the category of major defense equipment:

  • S-300 Clone missiles;
  • GAM-67 missiles;
  • air defense missile systems with laser guidance and increased range;
  • improvised transport launchers (ITEL 1.5);
  • kits for modifying mobile launch systems;
  • RPS 202 radar stations for countering UAVs.

If the deal is concluded, Ukraine will finance the purchase from European contributions and American military funding allocated under the previous administration.

At the same time, US funds will be credited as the US contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund.

The State Department emphasized that this sale is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to confront current and future threats.

Contractors will be selected on a competitive basis.

It is worth noting that the published list does not mention Patriot air defense systems or their missiles.

Recall, US President Donald Trump said that Washington is negotiating to grant Ukraine a license to produce “less advanced” missiles for the Patriot systems . He also noted that the US is now producing more Patriot missiles than ever before.
