The United States is ready to release two Russian citizens who were members of the crew of an oil tanker seized by the American Coast Guard.

This was reported by the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

According to her, the Russian side appealed to US President Donald Trump, after which he decided to release the detainees.

“We welcome this decision and express our gratitude to the US leadership,” the message says.

Zakharova added that the Russian Federation will now begin working on issues related to the return of individuals to Russian territory.

In turn, Trump, in an interview with Fox News, refused to answer the question of whether he had a conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin after the seizure of the ship.

He only confirmed that a Russian submarine and a destroyer were near the tanker, which quickly withdrew as soon as the United States appeared.

The White House previously reported that the United States plans to prosecute the crew of an oil tanker seized by the US Coast Guard, including Russians.

As a reminder, the United States of America conducted an operation to seize the oil tanker Mariner , bound for Venezuela and flying the Russian flag.

Later, Russia reacted to the seizure by the United States of an oil tanker flying the Russian flag – the Foreign Ministry demanded that the American side treat the Russians on board humanely.
