US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant warned China that purchases of Russian oil would lead to the imposition of high tariffs.
This was reported by Reuters.
At the end of two days of trade talks between the US and China in Stockholm, Bessent threatened Chinese representatives with 100% tariffs if Beijing continues to buy Russian oil.
In response, he was told that Beijing would defend its energy independence.
He stated that US President Donald Trump has the right to impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries that buy Russian oil.
“So I think everyone who buys Russian oil that is subject to sanctions should be prepared for that,” Bessent said at a press conference.
Chinese representatives stated that the PRC is a sovereign state and that oil purchases will be carried out in accordance with the country’s domestic policies.
“The Chinese take their sovereignty very seriously. We don’t want to violate their sovereignty, so they are willing to pay 100% duty,” Bessent said.
It is noted that China is the largest buyer of Russian energy resources, consuming about 2 million barrels of oil per day.
Earlier,US President Donald Trump said that Russia has 10 days to reach an agreement on the war in Ukraine . If it refuses, Washington will impose new economic restrictions, including tariffs.
By the way, US President Donald Trump said that he is no longer interested in meeting with Russian dictator Putin.
Recall, on July 28, US President Donald Trump said that he plans to shorten the deadline for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine. The day before, the Donald Trump administration announced that it would impose secondary sanctions and tariffs against Russia if a ceasefire is not achieved in Ukraine within 50 days.
