During military exercises in California dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the US Marine Corps, fragments of an artillery shell hit the security vehicle of US Vice President J.D. Vance.
This was reported by Fox News and The Daily Beast.
The incident occurred on October 18 at Camp Pendleton, where Vance, a former Marine and Iraq War veteran, was observing a live-fire exercise with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. During the exercise, a 155mm round fired from an M777 howitzer prematurely exploded in midair as it passed over a closed Interstate 5 highway.
The shrapnel damaged a motorcycle accompanying the vice president’s motorcade, as well as one of the local police cars. According to CBS News, the incident blocked traffic on the highway connecting San Diego and Orange counties for several hours. This caused significant discontent among residents and local authorities, as about 80,000 cars use this road daily.
The reaction of California’s political leadership was not long in coming. The state’s governor, a Democrat, Gavin Newsom, sharply criticized the administration’s actions, stating on social media that Vice President Vance and US President Donald Trump are “risking people’s lives for the sake of a show.”
According to Newsom, the White House is allegedly trying to pressure California, which traditionally supports the Democratic Party.
“ The president is putting his ego above responsibility, disregarding public safety… Using the armed forces to intimidate people you disagree with is not a show of force, but recklessness, disrespect, and behavior unworthy of people in such positions. Law and order? This is chaos and disorder ,” the governor said.
Recall that US President Donald Trump, according to Vice President Vance, sees “no reason” for economic isolation of Russia , except for the continuation of the war against Ukraine.
It was also previously reported that United States President Donald Trump denied media reports that he had allegedly called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hand over control of all of Donbas to Russia .
