In December, the Vatican tried to negotiate with the United States about the possibility of Nicolas Maduro’s departure to Russia. According to journalists, the Vatican believed that the Kremlin might make concessions regarding Ukraine.

This is reported by The Washington Post .

Journalists have learned that on Christmas Eve, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who is in charge of diplomatic negotiations for the Vatican, met with the American ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Burch. During the conversation, the United States’ plans for Venezuela were discussed.

According to the documents obtained, Cardinal Parolin tried for several days to organize a direct conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whom journalists call one of the key authors of American actions regarding Venezuela.

During contacts with the American side, Parolin stated that Russia was ready to provide asylum to Nicolas Maduro. He called on the United States to be patient in order to persuade the Venezuelan leader to agree to this option.

According to one of the informed interlocutors, Cardinal Parolin has a personal interest in Venezuela, as he previously served as the Vatican representative in Caracas. He was also involved in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

According to the documents, during the meeting on December 24, Parolin said that Russia was ready to accept Maduro. He also shared information, described in the documents as a rumor, that Venezuela had become an important element in the negotiations regarding the war between Ukraine and Russia.

“Moscow will abandon Venezuela if it is satisfied with Ukraine,” the interlocutor told the journalists.

According to journalists, this scenario could not be implemented due to Maduro’s own position. He did not believe in the possibility of forceful action by the United States and regarded Washington’s statements as a bluff.

“He wasn’t going to agree to a deal. He was just going to sit back and watch people create a crisis,” one of the sources familiar with the matter told the publication.

The article also mentions that a few days before the American actions, Maduro danced on Venezuelan television, which was perceived in the United States as a demonstrative disregard for threats from Donald Trump.

Recall that US President Donald Trump ordered strikes on targets inside Venezuela on Saturday, January 3. The Venezuelan government subsequently declared a state of emergency in the country due to the American attack .

Trump later announced that Nicolas Maduro and his wife had been captured and taken out of Venezuela.

It has been reported that Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife have been charged with conspiracy for the purpose of “narco-terrorism” and for the purpose of “importing cocaine.”
