Vegetable crisis in Russia: seed shortage threatens this year’s harvest

Problems continue to mount in the agro-industrial sector of the Russian economy. There is a threat of a shortage of late-harvest vegetables due to a lack of seeds.

It is noted that the situation with carrot, beet, and potato seeds is particularly critical.

“Almost all of Russia’s seeds were purchased abroad, primarily from the Netherlands, which accounted for 80% of imports. But since July of this year, Russia has banned the import of seeds and seedlings from this country, allegedly due to diseases detected in them,” the Central Plant Protection Agency noted.

However, in reality, this ban is part of the Russian food policy, which is trying to create the image of a state that is capable of imposing sanctions against “unfriendly countries.”

At the same time, Russia does not have its own seed fund, because “import substitution” in the agricultural sector has completely failed.

Current vegetable prices are rising rapidly. The situation is so dire that the Russian government is proposing to introduce state regulation of prices for “borscht” vegetables.

“All Russians are paying for the aggressive foreign policy of the Russian Federation, its attempts to play the role of a global geopolitical player. They see this payment, among other things, in ever-increasing checks for basic food products,” the CPD noted.

It was previously reported that the collapse of civil aviation in Russia, which occurred on July 5-6, could have caused losses of up to 20 billion rubles to the Russian economy .

It should be noted that the war against Ukraine, sanctions, and increased spending on the military-industrial complex have led to an increase in prices for basic food products in Russia .
