The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that global tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump in April are illegal. The decision was made by a majority of 6 votes to 3.

This is reported by Bloomberg .

The court ruled that Donald Trump exceeded his authority by invoking a federal emergency powers law to impose “reciprocal” tariffs on trading partners around the world, as well as targeted import duties that the administration claimed were intended to counter the trafficking of fentanyl.

The judges did not address the question of whether importers affected by the increased rates are entitled to reimbursement. That issue has been remanded to a lower court.

If the claims are fully met, the amount of compensation could reach up to $170 billion , which is more than half of all revenue received from tariffs.

The US stock market rose after the decision was announced. The Dow Jones, which had been falling, rose about 0.2%, the S&P 500 rose 0.4%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.6%.

By the way, US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on imports from eight European countries due to their position on Greenland. The tariffs will be in effect until a deal is reached to fully purchase the island and will increase to 25% from June 1.

The day before, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 25 percent tariffs on countries that continue to trade with Iran.

Recall that United States President Donald Trump announced the introduction of a new trade policy that provides for a 100% tariff on patented and branded medicines imported into the United States. The relevant restrictions will come into effect on October 1, 2025.
