Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Geraskevych was disqualified before the start of the competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee did not allow the athlete to compete because of his intention to enter the track wearing a so-called “memory helmet” – with portraits of Ukrainian athletes who died in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Geraskevych was supposed to start today at 10:30 Kyiv time, but he was not allowed to compete.
The IOC said the athlete’s helmet “did not comply with the rules.” It stressed that Geraskevych could have used the helmet during training runs. In addition, the committee claims that it offered him the opportunity to demonstrate it immediately after the competition in the mixed zone for communication with the media.
The IOC also added that to support the athletes, special memorial spaces have been set up in the Olympic Villages, “where grief can be expressed with dignity and respect.”
We will remind you that Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Geraskevych went to training on the Olympic track wearing a “memory helmet” with images of athletes who died during the war with Russia.
As reported, the International Olympic Committee has banned skeleton athlete Vladislav Geraskevych from competing at the Olympic Games in a helmet with the image of Ukrainian athletes who died as a result of the full-scale invasion of Russia.
