European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has asked EU leaders to review the rules for temporary protection for Ukrainians. According to media reports, this may include restrictions for certain categories of refugees.

This is reported by Der Spiegel, which reviewed a letter from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to the leaders of EU countries.

According to the publication, the letter that von der Leyen sent on the eve of the European Council meeting mentions the European Commission’s intention to propose an extension of the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainians.

At the same time, the document notes that the scope of this mechanism should be limited in such a way as not to undermine Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.

The letter does not mention specific measures. At the same time, Der Spiegel notes that such wording can be interpreted as a hint at a possible restriction on the admission of men of draft age. According to the publication, Western media have repeatedly reported on discussions of such an initiative.

As a reminder, Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssell said that the European Union should consider limiting temporary protection for Ukrainian men of military age who travel abroad during a full-scale war.

By the way, Poland supports the idea of limiting access to temporary protection in European Union countries for Ukrainian men of draft age.
