War as a school: the GUR revealed details of the participation of North Korean soldiers in the war against Ukraine

North Korean military personnel continue to participate in Russia’s war against Ukraine on the side of the aggressor country. As of January 2026, units of the DPRK army are located in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, from where they carry out attacks on border communities in Ukraine.

This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

According to intelligence, North Korean soldiers operate under the command of Russian military personnel. They fire from artillery and multiple rocket launcher systems, conduct aerial reconnaissance, artillery reconnaissance, and adjust MLRS strikes.

The GUR notes that the DPRK’s participation in the war also has a practical purpose – gaining real combat experience. The North Korean military pays particular attention to mastering unmanned technologies and modern methods of warfare.

As part of the agreements between Moscow and Pyongyang, there is a regular rotation of military personnel stationed in the Kursk region. During the entire time of the DPRK’s participation in the war against Ukraine, about three thousand North Korean soldiers have already returned home – trained and with combat experience.

Most of them, according to intelligence, work as military instructors, passing on the acquired skills of modern warfare to the entire DPRK army.

As reported, the DPRK has decided to make the Russian language a mandatory school subject, starting from grade 4. This decision was part of the expansion of humanitarian and educational cooperation between the DPRK and Russia.
