“We are ready for this process”: Western leaders make important statement on Trump’s peace plan

A group of Western leaders have issued a joint statement on an initial draft of a U.S. peace plan for Ukraine, saying the document could serve as a basis for work but needed to be refined.

This was reported by the press service of the Council of the EU.

The statement said the leaders welcomed the United States’ efforts to resolve the situation in Ukraine. They stressed that the initial 28-point draft contained important elements necessary for a just and lasting peace.

The leaders also stated that the document requires additional work. They are ready to engage in further consultations to ensure the sustainability of the future agreement.

“We welcome the continued efforts of the United States to establish peace in Ukraine,” the leaders said in a statement.

The document emphasizes that the principle of inviolability of borders by force remains key. The leaders expressed concern about proposed restrictions on the development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which could leave the state vulnerable to further attacks.

“We believe that the project can serve as a basis, but requires additional work,” the statement said.

The leaders also recalled that any provisions concerning the European Union or NATO can only be implemented with the consent of the member states of the respective organizations.

“We emphasize that changes concerning the European Union and NATO can only take place with the consent of all members,” the document states.

At the end of the statement, the leaders emphasized their unwavering support for Ukraine and their readiness to continue coordination with the United States and Ukraine.

“We will continue close coordination with Ukraine and the United States in the coming days,” the statement concluded.

It is worth adding that the statement was made by the President of the European Council António Costa, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney, the President of Finland Alexander Stubb, the President of France Emmanuel Macron, the Federal Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, the Prime Minister of Ireland Simon Harris Martin, the Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Maloni, the Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Dick Schoof, the Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre, the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer.

Earlier, key provisions of the draft US “peace plan” , allegedly agreed upon by representatives of Donald Trump and the Kremlin, became known. The document contains 28 points relating to the security, territories, economy and political future of Ukraine.

Subsequently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved the composition of the delegation for consultations with international partners on ending the war.

At the same time, the Institute for the Study of War stated that the “peace plan” of the US and Russia, which allegedly consists of 28 points, means the actual surrender of Ukraine and creates conditions for new aggression by the Russian Federation. Analysts emphasize that the document deprives Ukraine of key defensive positions and does not offer any real guarantees.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the nation with a statement, stressing that the country is going through one of the most difficult periods in its recent history. He noted that the state is under unprecedented pressure and that a difficult choice may lie ahead.
