The “December 1st” initiative group has sharply criticized the 28-point American “peace plan” that Washington has proposed as a possible way to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. Ukrainian intellectuals have said that the document “crosses the line of political cynicism” and does not correspond to the realities of Ukraine’s struggle for freedom.

The statement emphasizes that US President Donald Trump’s claim that Ukraine has no “trump cards” in negotiations with Russia is false and based on misconceptions about the nature of Ukrainian resistance.

The group members emphasized that Ukraine’s first and foremost advantage is dignity, both national and personal. According to them, it is not measured by the number of territories or weapons, but is based on freedom, truth, and honor.

“It’s hard to imagine that the leader of a country that prides itself on democracy and freedom needs to be explained. If it is necessary, then it seems that you are playing by completely different rules in this deck of cards,” the group said, addressing Trump.

They called the second “trump card” the overcome fear. According to them, over the years of fighting for independence, Ukrainians have learned not to bow their heads even in the face of nuclear threats.

The third key factor, the group said, is the solidarity of the American people with Ukraine, which has been consistently maintained from the times of the dissident movement to the present. They emphasized that diplomatic risks should not be confused with the loss of support for the United States as a state: this is only about the policies of the current administration.

The statement also emphasized that any ultimatums from states that consider themselves “stronger” are unacceptable and do not correspond to the spirit of the 21st century. The group recalled that the difference between compromise and capitulation is fundamental, and Ukraine should not allow itself to be imposed humiliating conditions.

The “First of December” Initiative Group is a non-governmental association of Ukrainian intellectuals, created in 2011 on the 20th anniversary of the All-Ukrainian referendum on independence. It includes scientists, human rights activists, cultural figures, and clergy, including Olga Aivazovska, Volodymyr Yermolenko, Yevhen Zakharov, Yosyf Zisels, Myroslav Marynovych, and others.

As a reminder, Moscow reacted sharply to the updated version of the peace plan for the settlement of the war against Ukraine – Russian representatives actually rejected the document, stating that it “does not lead to a result.”
