President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Ukrainian energy workers and repair crews who are working around the clock to restore the power system after Russian strikes, while calling on Western allies to increase support for Ukraine.
The head of state wrote about this in Telegram.
Zelensky noted that the situation in the energy system remains difficult, but the authorities and relevant services are doing everything possible to restore the damaged infrastructure as soon as possible. “The situation in the energy system remains difficult, but we are doing everything to restore everything as soon as possible. And during tonight there were more than 200 strike drones,” the head of state noted.
According to him, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Khmelnytskyi and Odesa regions were under attack. Dozens of people were injured as a result of the shelling, including a child. As of the morning of January 18, two deaths were known.
The President reported that this week alone, Russia has used against Ukraine: over 1,300 strike drones, about 1,050 guided aerial bombs, and 29 missiles of various types.
The Head of State emphasized that Ukraine needs more defense, primarily missiles for air defense systems.
“If Russia is deliberately delaying the diplomatic process, then the world’s reaction must be decisive: more assistance to Ukraine and more pressure on the aggressor. Thank you to all partners who are with us now, who are ready to help protect life and strengthen Ukraine, and work together to restore security,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
As a reminder, the air defense forces neutralized 167 drones , with which the Russian occupiers attacked Ukraine since the evening of Saturday, January 17. The air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces of Ukraine. 30 strike UAVs were recorded hitting 15 locations, as well as the fall of downed (fragments of) UAVs at two locations.
Meanwhile, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that Russia is considering options for striking electricity transmission substations that support the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. This is supposed to force Ukraine to sign unacceptable surrender demands and cause a power outage and heat cut for the civilian population.
