“A Surprise for the Enemy”: Ukraine Reveals Key Features of Sapsan Ballistic Missile

Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak has announced that Ukraine has launched mass production of its domestically developed Sapsan ballistic missile.

 He revealed this in an interview with The Times.

According to Yermak, the Ukrainian military first deployed the missile in May, successfully striking a target 300 kilometers away.

He emphasized that, unlike drones, the Ukrainian ballistic missile would be significantly harder for Russian defenses to intercept.

“Things are going very well. I believe we’ll be able to surprise our enemies more than once,” Yermak said when asked whether the missile could potentially reach Moscow.

He also shared key specifications of the Sapsan missile. It weighs 480 kilograms—twice as much as the American ATACMS—and travels at over five times the speed of sound. The missile is expected to be capable of striking targets at distances of up to 500 kilometers.

As a reminder, Valentyn Badrak, director of the Center for Army Research, Conversion and Disarmament, earlier confirmed that the Sapsan had successfully passed combat testing and would now enter mass production.
Earlier, Valentyn Badrak reported that in mid-May 2025, a ballistic missile for the Armed Forces of Ukraine was successfully tested – it traveled almost 300 kilometers and destroyed a Russian command post. After successful use, the missile is planned to be launched into series production.

As is known, the number of hits on Russian command posts increased in May, which may indicate that Ukraine is testing its ballistic missiles.
