During the massive Russian attack on Ukraine on the night of June 15, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was damaged. It has been officially confirmed that the Assumption Cathedral was hit by a Russian attack drone of the Shahed type.

This was reported by Yuriy Ignat, spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the press service of the Security Service of Ukraine.

According to Ignat, even before the collection of evidence was completed, the Russian side began to spread disinformation about the alleged involvement of Ukrainian air defense in the fire in the cathedral.

“It is officially known that the Assumption Cathedral was hit by a “Shahed”. At the time, when we had not yet collected all the evidence ourselves, the Russians stated that the fire occurred as a result of a Patriot air defense missile strike,” Ignat noted.

The SBU reported that the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was attacked by a “Geran-2” drone, a Russian version of the Iranian Shahed kamikaze drone.

This conclusion was made based on an analysis of the drone debris found at the impact site.

According to the investigation, the enemy attacked the monastery complex at 01:50 on June 15 during a massive shelling of the capital.

During an inspection of the scene, SBU officers discovered fragments of the hull and engine of a Russian kamikaze drone that hit the Stefanivsky chapel of the Assumption Cathedral on the territory of the Lavra.

In addition, it was established that some components of the drone were manufactured on the territory of the Russian Federation in the Alabuga special economic zone. This is evidenced by the corresponding markings found on the drone wreckage.

The impact damaged the roof, domes, walls, and glazing of the Assumption Cathedral. There were no fatalities or injuries.

The blast wave also damaged neighboring civilian infrastructure facilities in the Pechersk district of Kyiv.

Security Service investigators have classified the attack as a war crime and have opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Investigative actions are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of the Russian attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Thus, the results of the inspection and the evidence collected at the scene conclusively confirmed that the damage to the Assumption Cathedral was caused by a Russian kamikaze drone strike, and not by the work of Ukrainian air defense, as Russian propaganda claimed.

Currently, experts continue to assess the extent of damage to one of Ukraine’s main shrines. Work is also underway to eliminate the consequences of the attack and record the damage.
