Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine will not lose the war and will end it with its victory. According to him, Vladimir Putin’s demands to withdraw Ukrainian troops from some territories are unacceptable, and victory lies in stopping Russia and restoring justice.
He said this in an interview with the BBC .
Zelensky stressed that he does not agree with Moscow’s demands to transfer part of Donbas, as well as other territories of the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions in exchange for a ceasefire.
“I just look at it differently. I don’t see it as just land — or not just land. To me, it means withdrawing, that is, weakening our position, abandoning hundreds of thousands of our people who live there. That’s how I look at it. Dividing our society with this retreat,” the president said.
He also stated that Russia has already started World War III, and the only response should be increased military and economic pressure.
“I believe that Putin has already started it. The question is how capable he is of seizing certain territories. And the question is how to stop him,” Zelenskyy noted.
Commenting on the assessments about Ukraine’s possible defeat, the head of state replied: “Are we losing? Absolutely not. Because we are fighting for the independence of Ukraine.”
According to the president, victory means stopping the killings and returning Ukrainians to normal life, as well as eliminating the global threat from Russia.
“Today, stopping Putin, preventing him from occupying Ukraine, is a victory for the world,” he emphasized.
At the same time, Zelenskyy stated that a return to the 1991 borders is a matter of time.
“And we will do it anyway. It’s absolutely clear, it’s a matter of time,” the president said.
He also commented on the statements of US President Donald Trump, who previously called on Ukraine to sit at the negotiating table as soon as possible.
“I am not a dictator. And I did not start a war. That’s all,” Zelenskyy said.
The President emphasized that security guarantees for Ukraine must be institutionally secured and supported by the US Congress.
“That’s why Congress votes for them. It’s not just presidents. Congress is needed. Because presidents change, but institutions remain,” he noted.
Separately, Zelenskyy stated the need to obtain licenses for the production of American weapons, in particular missiles for Patriot systems.
“Today, the issue of air defense is the most difficult. Unfortunately, partners are not yet granting licenses for us to produce, for example, Patriot systems or at least missiles for the systems we already have. So far, we have not achieved success in this,” the president said.
When asked about the possibility of holding elections during the war, Zelenskyy replied that this was possible provided that security guarantees and relevant changes to the legislation were in place.
“If this is a condition for ending the war, let’s do it,” he noted.
By the way, journalists reported that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24, 2022, on the orders of Vladimir Putin, became a war that destroyed the Kremlin’s key military and political calculations . According to analysts, the conflict led to significant human losses, economic problems, and a weakening of Moscow’s international positions.
It was previously reported that Russia may not limit itself to territorial claims during possible negotiations to end the war against Ukraine . According to their estimates, Moscow is capable of making additional political and security demands.
Recall that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov repeated the Kremlin’s demands for Ukraine as a condition for ending the wars . Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War said that these messages indicate Moscow’s desire to politically subjugate Ukraine.
