Global wheat buyers are bracing for supply cuts due to attacks on grain infrastructure and ships in the Black Sea. The disruptions are sending grain prices soaring and importers looking for alternative suppliers.

Reuters writes about this.

Wheat futures in Chicago have risen more than 17% since the beginning of July. One of the main reasons was the reduction in grain supply from the Black Sea region. At the same time, wheat prices are also rising in other major exporting countries, including Argentina, Australia and the United States.

Attacks on ports and ships in recent weeks have shut down some grain terminals, forcing shippers to delay or cancel dozens of grain shipments at the height of the export season.

A Singaporean trader who transports wheat across the Black Sea told Reuters that ships were supposed to start arriving for loading from mid-August, but many of them were unable to enter ports.

Because of this, buyers are considering replacing some of the Black Sea wheat with supplies from Australia, North America, and Argentina.

Egypt, Indonesia, Algeria, Bangladesh, Jordan, Thailand, Tunisia, and Vietnam are heavily dependent on wheat supplies from Ukraine and Russia. Export disruptions pose additional risks, especially for large importers.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, in July alone, Ukraine recorded 35 attacks on ships in ports, 22 at sea, and 67 on port infrastructure. For comparison, 15 such attacks were recorded in the entire year 2025.
