Black Sea Disruptions Send Wheat Prices Higher: What’s Happening on Global Markets

US wheat futures rose to their highest level in more than a week on Monday, August 10, amid disruptions to Black Sea shipping and growing concerns over grain supplies from the region.

The most active wheat futures on the Chicago Board of Trade rose 1.8%, reaching their highest level since July 30. At the same time, the leading contract for hard red winter wheat rose 2.4%.
An additional factor was Turkey’s decision to temporarily suspend its ships’ passage through the Black Sea due to heightened security risks related to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called for a moratorium on attacks in the Black Sea region.
Shipping disruptions have particularly supported prices for American hard red winter wheat, which competes directly with high-protein food wheat from the Black Sea region and Europe, said Joe Davis, director of commodities trading at Futures International.
At the same time, the expert noted that the situation will not necessarily lead to an immediate increase in export orders for the US. However, the risks of disruptions reduce the available volumes of grain on the world market and may force importers to seek alternative sources of supply.
Prices were also affected by concerns about Ukrainian exports. Ukraine warned that due to Russian attacks, agricultural exports in the 2026-2027 marketing year could be more than half of previous estimates.
It was previously reported that Russian forces attacked a merchant ship under the flag of Guinea-Bissau in the Black Sea, which was carrying Ukrainian wheat. The attack killed one person and injured three others.
