Ivan Kupala is one of the oldest Ukrainian holidays, combining ancient folk customs and Christian traditions. It symbolizes the flowering of nature, summer, purification, and the power of the sun, water, and fire.

Kupala Night is traditionally accompanied by rituals: Ukrainians weave wreaths, light bonfires, sing songs, and gather together near bodies of water.

After the churches switched to the new Julian calendar, the date of the holiday changed. Now in Ukraine, Ivan Kupala is celebrated on the night of June 23-24, although some people continue to adhere to the old date — July 6-7.

Among the most famous Kupala legends is the story of a fern flower that supposedly blooms only once a year. In fact, it is just a beautiful folk tale that has become part of Ukrainian folklore.

Today, Ivan Kupala remains an important part of Ukrainian culture and reminds us of traditions that have been passed down through generations.
