When is the Generosity Evening celebrated according to the new calendar?

The Generous Evening, also known as the Feast of Malanka, is one of the key winter holidays in the Ukrainian traditional calendar. After the transition to the updated church calendar, the date of its celebration changed.

According to the new calendar, Shchedry Vecher is celebrated a week after Christmas, at the end of the year. This is the date currently valid for most Ukrainians.

When is the Feast of the Abundance in 2025?

  • December 31 – Generous Evening (Malanky), the day of memory of the Venerable Melania
  • January 1 – New Year and St. Basil the Great’s Day

This sequence corresponds to the updated church calendar that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has adopted.

Generous Evening traditionally combines Christian motifs with ancient folk rituals, including generosity, dressing up, and a festive dinner.
