When the power comes back on, don’t turn on all your appliances at once: advice from the State Emergency Service
After power is restored, do not immediately turn on all electrical appliances. Experts recommend waiting 5-10 minutes, gradually reconnecting appliances, and checking for the smell of gas in the home.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) reminds of this.

The service recommends allowing the power grid to stabilize before turning on the necessary appliances one at a time. Specifically, you can connect the refrigerator and water heater first, followed by other appliances.

Special attention should be paid to safety. If even a slight smell of gas is detected when the power is restored, do not turn on or off any electrical appliances. Open windows and call the gas emergency service at 104.

How to Prepare for Outages

While the power is available, you should charge your phones, power banks, and flashlights. It’s also recommended to replenish your supplies of drinking water, batteries, and candles.

Additionally, it’s important to ensure lighting, heat, water, and food are available in advance. If you have children in the house, you should prepare activities for them to do during the power outage.

The State Emergency Service notes that early preparation and adherence to safety regulations will help make it easier to survive potential power outages.
