In August, Orthodox believers in Ukraine will observe a two-week fast in honor of an important holiday – the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Lent begins on August 1st inclusive, and ends before the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – August 14th.

Previously, Ukrainians fasted from August 14 to 27. However, after the Orthodox Church of Ukraine switched to the new calendar, the dates shifted. However, some continue to celebrate in the old style.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a holiday in honor of Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is about the grace associated with the transition to eternal life.

According to church regulations, the strictness of the meal on these days is the same as during Great Lent.

Excluded:

  • meat products;
  • dairy products;
  • eggs.

Fish is allowed only on the feast of the Transfiguration.
