Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced the installation of a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa in the center of Kyiv. The monument is planned to be placed on Shevchenko Boulevard, where a monument to Vladimir Lenin was toppled in 2013 during the Revolution of Dignity.
He said this during the celebrations on the occasion of the Constitution Day of Ukraine.
During his speech, the head of state also announced that a bust of Ivan Mazepa had been installed in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. According to the president, this decision is intended to “correct another historical injustice.”
“The bust of the great Ukrainian and patron of the Lavra, Ivan Mazepa, will absolutely rightfully stand. For centuries, Russia has tarnished his name, sought to make Ukrainians look at their history through someone else’s eyes, convincing our people that Mazepa is a traitor. This is a lie, and this lie has lost forever,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The President called Ivan Mazepa an outstanding statesman and military figure, a patron of the arts, and the head of the Cossack state. He also emphasized that under the hetman’s patronage, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra flourished, and its architectural ensemble acquired the features of Ukrainian Baroque.
“The scale of this figure certainly deserves a full-fledged monument in the capital of our state. I believe that the ideal place for it exists. It has existed since December 2013 on Shevchenko Boulevard. And I am sure that where Lenin fell, Mazepa will stand firmly,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
As a reminder, on the night of June 15, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Kyiv using ballistic missiles and drones. The shelling killed 4 people and injured at least 23 people, including a child.
During the massive Russian attack on Ukraine on the night of June 15, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was damaged . It has been officially confirmed that the Assumption Cathedral was hit by a Russian attack drone of the Shahed type.
Later, Metropolitan of Bila Tserkva and spokesman for the Kyiv Metropolis of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine , Yevstratiy (Zorya), said that the Russian strike damaged the roof of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra , but the damage inside the building was not critical. At the same time, the attack on the shrine once again demonstrated Moscow’s complete disregard for world religious values and international agreements.
