The National Bank of Ukraine reminded citizens about the rules for the circulation of the hryvnia and cases when damaged banknotes are declared invalid. Financial institutions, exchange offices, and even stores have the right to refuse to accept damaged banknotes.
This was reported by the NBU press service .
This refers to money that has been damaged by water, fire, chemicals or other aggressive environments. If a banknote has lost more than 45% of its area , it is automatically considered unusable. Also unacceptable are banknotes that have stuck together after damage – the National Bank warns against trying to separate them yourself, so as not to aggravate the damage.
At the same time, the NBU emphasizes: if at least 55% of the banknote area is preserved, banks are obliged to accept it for exchange and issue new money to the client. In case of doubt, a special study may be conducted, which the National Bank carries out free of charge. If the banknotes are recognized as genuine, their value is fully reimbursed. If a counterfeit is found or damage occurred during emergencies, such money is withdrawn without compensation.
It is separately noted that banks have the right to refuse to accept banknotes contaminated with toxic, chemical or even radioactive substances. At the same time, owners can contact the territorial divisions of the NBU, but only on condition of providing documents on disinfection or decontamination.
Thus, Ukrainians are advised to carefully monitor the status of their money, as in a number of cases, hryvnias may lose their status as a means of payment and not be accepted in banks, exchange offices, and retail establishments.
It is worth adding that from October 1, 2025, the National Bank of Ukraine will begin the gradual withdrawal of 10-kopeck coins from cash circulation.
Earlier, the National Bank of Ukraine reported a significant increase in the number of counterfeit hryvnia banknotes . Most often, fraudsters imitate banknotes in denominations of 500 and 200 hryvnia. At the same time, the NBU emphasizes that the level of counterfeiting remains controlled, and knowledge of the security features allows you to distinguish fake from real money without special equipment.
As reported, the National Bank of Ukraine plans to replace kopecks with coins called “steps”.
