White House denies involvement in Starlink restrictions in Ukraine: US will turn to SpaceX
The administration of US President Donald Trump denies involvement in the restrictions on Starlink operations in Ukraine. Washington said it would contact SpaceX to find out the reasons for the problems.
This is reported by Axios.
On Wednesday, October 14, advisers to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky contacted White House officials to find out whether the US had made a decision to restrict Starlink and how the situation could be corrected. The Ukrainian side also addressed these issues to the CIA and the Pentagon.
The White House stressed that it does not control SpaceX’s activities. One of the sources told Axios that the Trump administration plans to discuss the situation with the company and determine the reasons for the disruptions.
A senior US official also assured that the US government was not involved in the restrictions. According to officials, the problems may be related to a technical malfunction.
At the same time, SpaceX owner Elon Musk expressed a different position the day before. He stated that the Starshield system is owned by the US government, and the limits on its speed and use are determined by the US military and ultimately the president of the country.
“Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government. Any speed or usage restrictions are determined by the US military and ultimately by the US President,” Musk wrote.
The billionaire also explained that Starlink and Starshield have different owners and operate under different rules.
According to him, Starlink is a commercial service of SpaceX that can be used for civilian or defense needs. At the same time, it is not intended for offensive military operations, as, as Musk noted, such activities would be inappropriate for a commercial company.
It was previously reported that on the night of Wednesday, October 14, Starlink terminals began to lose communication while traveling at speeds over 160 km/h. This, according to preliminary data, disrupted a number of important missions. At the same time, conventional satellite communication terminals continue to operate.
In addition, Flash previously reported that SpaceX had imposed speed limits on Starlink terminals while in motion. Because of this, the Ukrainian Defense Forces were unable to complete a number of important missions.
