WHO declares international emergency over Ebola outbreak in Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern. The WHO said there is a risk of the disease spreading beyond the region, but it is not yet a pandemic.

The organization’s statement notes that the epidemiological situation meets the criteria for an emergency of international concern due to the potential danger of the international spread of the virus.

In making his decision, the WHO Director-General took into account information provided by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, as well as scientific principles, available evidence and an assessment of the risks to human health.

In addition, the WHO assessed the risk of international spread of the disease and the possible consequences for international transport.

“The situation meets the criteria for an emergency of international concern due to the risk of the disease spreading beyond the region,” the WHO said in a statement.

At the same time, the World Health Organization emphasized that the Ebola outbreak is not currently classified as a pandemic .

Recall that an outbreak of the Ebola virus has been recorded in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo , resulting in the death of 65 people. About several hundred more people have been infected or are suspected of being infected.

Earlier, “Pryamiy” reported that hantavirus was detected on board the MV Hondius cruise ship. Subsequently, the evacuation of part of the crew , including Ukrainian citizens, began from the ship. One Ukrainian is to be delivered to the Netherlands by a separate special flight , four more Ukrainian citizens remain on the ship and continue to perform their official duties.
