Turkish shipping companies have become one of the main tools helping Russia circumvent Western sanctions on oil exports. According to the investigation, Turkey has become a key logistics hub for the Russian “shadow fleet”.

This is reported by Intelligence Online .

The shipping company EMT Gemi İşletmeciliği AS, which was sanctioned by the European Union on June 15 due to its ties to the Russian “shadow fleet”, is just one of many Turkish companies involved in the transportation of Russian oil.

As Intelligence Online notes, investigators from the European Union and Ukraine have concluded that there is “an entire ecosystem of private Turkish shipping operators” that has effectively become a major logistics hub for Moscow.

The publication notes that Turkey did not join Western sanctions against Russia. This created legal conditions under which local companies can operate ships under European Union and British sanctions without violating Turkish law.

“It is this legal asymmetry that the network is exploiting, transforming Istanbul into a new Russian economic capital, where contracts are concluded, management is transferred, special purpose companies are created, and ships change hands in a completely legal manner,” the material says.

By the way, Canada has announced a new package of sanctions against Russia. The restrictions include representatives of the Russian energy sector, defense industry, propaganda structures, as well as vessels of the so-called shadow fleet.

As previously reported, the UK has announced a new package of sanctions against Russia , which is intended to target schemes to circumvent Western restrictions. The new measures apply to vessels transporting Russian oil, LNG tankers, intermediaries and structures linked to Russian military intelligence.

As a reminder, the European Union has approved another package of sanctions against Russia. The new restrictions target enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex, companies associated with the shadow fleet, the oil business, and Kremlin propagandists.
