Who will be responsible for illegal sanctions: is the presidential representative Vlasyuk ready to pay compensation if he loses in the ECHR?
The Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy of Ukraine, Vladyslav Vlasyuk, was asked whether he would pay compensation from his own pocket if the European Court of Human Rights found the decision on sanctions against Petro Poroshenko unlawful. Vlasyuk himself noted that the sanctions “are of a preventive nature.”
This is reported by “Pryamiy” .
In the comments to Vlasyuk’s post , Ukrainian politician and diplomat Valeriy Chaly asked: “And if the ECHR ultimately recognizes that not everything is OK and there are still problems, then are you ready to pay the amount imposed on the state of Ukraine personally (and not at the expense of taxpayers), if, from your point of view, “a mosquito won’t scratch your nose here”?”
Journalist and expert on international affairs Viktor Shlinchak ironically remarked: “Sanctions are not punishment, but the function of a restrictive economic measure? Then write that it is generally a good thing.”
“But let’s be serious – society wants to hear clearly what sanctions are being imposed for, why this applies to certain people, what are the grounds? And why are these people, if in most cases they are not just citizens of Ukraine, but even live on the territory of Ukraine, not being prosecuted and their (theoretical) guilt not being proven through a court? Isn’t this what happens in most European countries (and not in individual exceptions)? You don’t communicate all this to society – and therefore, naturally, suspicions arise of a) bias, b) selectivity, and c) political killing. Maybe it’s time to give answers?” he asked.
Shlinchak, like Valeriy Chaly, wondered whether Vlasyuk would pay personally if the ECHR imposed an obligation on Ukraine to pay huge compensation to those on the sanctions lists.
“Why should the country pay for the mistakes of specific officials?” he emphasized.
The day before, Petro Poroshenko’s lawyers filed an appeal against the Supreme Court’s decision to refuse to lift the illegal sanctions imposed by Zelensky.
As is known, the Supreme Court, under pressure from the authorities, refused to lift illegal sanctions against opposition leader Petro Poroshenko – this decision will block Ukraine’s membership in the EU.
