“Why not in the trenches?”: Russian man attacks Ukrainian-speaking family in Switzerland

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on Swiss authorities to investigate after a video surfaced online showing a Russian man verbally humiliating a Ukrainian family on a train and threatening them because of their Ukrainian language. The incident took place in the canton of Bern and has already gained widespread publicity.
“The video of a Russian-speaking man verbally attacking and threatening a Ukrainian-speaking family on a Swiss train is appalling. Hate speech and interethnic hatred are unacceptable. We have appealed to Swiss law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident and ensure accountability. Such behavior should not be tolerated,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tykhy.
According to 20 Minuten , the Russian was driving with a can of beer on the table and began to attack the family as soon as he heard Ukrainian. He threatened them with death and mockingly asked his father why he was “not in the trenches.”
“We were shocked, especially our one-year-old child was deeply affected by this incident,” said the man, whose parents are originally from Belarus and he himself has Swiss citizenship.
According to his wife, the aggressor calmed down only after he was pushed. The police of the canton of Bern confirmed the incident and opened an investigation. Both parties have expressed their intention to file statements.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that Yevgeny Matveyev, the former mayor of Dniprorudne, located in the temporarily occupied part of the Zaporizhia region, died as a result of injuries and damages received in Russian captivity .
Russian occupiers also attacked the village of Richne in Zaporizhia region . A drone strike killed a 40-year-old man and caused a fire.
