Will the US impose sanctions against Russia: Rubio gave his answer

The US is not currently planning to impose new sanctions against Russia, as it seeks to leave room for possible peace talks.

This was stated by United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, commenting on the position of Donald Trump’s team, as quoted by Politico.

“If we do what everyone here wants, which is come in and crush them with new sanctions, we’ll probably lose the opportunity to talk to them about a ceasefire, and then who’s going to talk to them?” Rubio said.

He also noted that Trump will determine the time and circumstances when new sanctions are appropriate. According to his team, once sanctions are imposed, the opportunity for diplomatic dialogue is likely to be lost.

Rubio added that if Trump does impose new sanctions, it would almost be an admission that talks will not happen anytime soon. However, he said the US will continue to engage and try to use any opportunity to force Russia to the negotiating table.

As negotiations with Russia have reached an impasse, Rubio noted that Moscow believes it can achieve its territorial goals on the battlefield — an assessment with which Washington disagrees.

“Our feeling is that the Russians will try to achieve on the battlefield what they demanded at the negotiating table, namely the preservation of administrative boundaries of certain territories, etc. We believe that it will be much more difficult for them to achieve this than they think,” the Secretary of State added.

As a reminder, the US Senate has postponed the introduction of tougher sanctions against Russia until at least July . The reason for the delay is the conflict between Iran and Israel.

As reported, US President Donald Trump said at the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada, that he would not rush to impose new sanctions against Russia. The main reason is the high economic costs for the United States.
