Kyiv has prepared for possible power outages. Some traffic lights have been equipped with modern backup power cabinets that allow them to operate even in the event of long blackouts. This decision was made after massive power outages in 2022–2023.

In response to a request from “Pryamoy”, the Kyiv City State Administration reported that even before the war, traffic light facilities had 180 backup power cabinets, which allowed them to operate for up to 6 hours. But after mass power outages in Kyiv, new cabinets began to be installed, capable of supporting traffic lights for up to 24 hours.

Critical intersections, complex junctions, and areas near educational institutions received backup power first.

By the end of 2024, 312 traffic light facilities in the capital were equipped with modern autonomous power supply systems. As of September 1, 2025, this number is already 63% of the total, and the process continues.

Recall, it was previously reported that Kyiv has the largest number of traffic lights among all Ukrainian cities – over 10 thousand . This is significantly more than in large regional centers, which is explained by the complex road network and high traffic intensity. The Kyiv City State Administration clarified that the balance of the KP “Center for Traffic Organization” includes 749 traffic light objects of various types.

Previously, in Ukraine, from May 1, 2025, the traditional green traffic light signal was replaced with emerald – a more saturated shade that drivers perceive more clearly and noticeably.
