Russian dictator Vladimir Putin still seeks to gain full control over four Ukrainian regions — Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia.
This was reported by the BILD publication.
As noted, within the framework of the peace agreement, the Russian Federation is offering only a partial ceasefire, which will apply to strikes on energy facilities and large cities located in the rear.
The US, in turn, is considering the option of freezing the conflict along the current front line in exchange for Russia receiving new economic agreements and easing sanctions. However, the Kremlin does not agree to such a proposal.
Moreover, according to the publication, Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, misinterpreted Putin’s words and perceived them as if the Russian Federation was ready to make concessions. In particular, Witkoff understood the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions as a “peaceful withdrawal” of the Russian army from these territories.
“Witkoff doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” said a Ukrainian government official.
In addition, the publication emphasizes that European officials also believe that Trump’s special envoy is incompetent when it comes to territorial concessions.
It was previously reported that US President Donald Trump may recognize Russian control over part of the Ukrainian regions that are currently under occupation.
As a reminder, the US and Russia are seeking to reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine , which would consolidate Russian control over the occupied regions.
By the way, Ukraine has declared its readiness for a ceasefire along the entire front line , but will categorically not recognize Russian control over the occupied territories, as this contradicts the country’s Constitution.
