Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has instructed MPs to develop a bill on the possibility of holding elections during martial law. The initiative does not involve preparations for the elections, but is a reaction to statements by United States President Donald Trump.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine .

According to journalists, Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed people’s deputies to prepare a draft law that would determine the possibility of holding elections during martial law.

According to sources in the government, this initiative is not related to plans to organize an electoral process in the near future. It was a response to Donald Trump’s statements that elections have not been held in Ukraine for a long time.

According to the initiators, this step demonstrated the Ukrainian side’s readiness for elections provided that the appropriate security conditions are in place. At the same time, it is emphasized that holding elections is possible only if the level of hostilities is significantly reduced.

The article notes that security is key to organizing any vote. In particular, this requires an end to shelling and other hostilities by Russia.

A working meeting dedicated to this issue was held on Bankova Street last week. Participants discussed the main challenges related to security, the organization of the electoral process, and other aspects.

Currently, preparation of a relevant draft law has begun, which should comprehensively regulate the issue of the possibility of holding elections during martial law.

By the way, there are currently no bills or drafts in Ukraine that would regulate the holding of elections in wartime. However, the Verkhovna Rada is ready to prepare all necessary documents to ensure a democratic process even during hostilities.

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump said that, in his opinion, it is time for Ukraine to hold presidential elections. He said this in an interview at the White House.

Subsequently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he was ready to hold elections after US President Donald Trump said that they needed to be held.
