Chinese leader Xi Jinping, during a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing, said Russian dictator Vladimir Putin could ultimately be “damaged” by a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Financial Times reports this, citing sources.
According to the publication’s sources, Xi voiced this position during extensive talks with Trump, which also touched on Russia’s war against Ukraine.
An FT source familiar with meetings between Xi Jinping and former US President Joe Biden noted that the Chinese leader had not previously expressed such a direct assessment of Putin and the war, although their conversations were “frank and direct.”
The White House declined to comment on this information, and the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not respond to journalists’ requests for comment.
The Trump administration previously released an official briefing note following its meeting with Xi Jinping, but it made no mention of Ukraine or Putin.
It’s worth recalling that Xi Jinping and Donald Trump met in Beijing on May 15. Following the talks, the Chinese side emphasized the need for diplomatic dialogue to resolve international conflicts.
Wang Yi also stated that China supports the negotiation process as the main way to resolve the situation in the Middle East.
“Beijing calls on the parties to continue resolving disputes over the nuclear issue and the Strait of Hormuz through negotiations and on the basis of observing the ceasefire,” Wang Yi said.
It was previously reported that the United States is ready to facilitate a diplomatic end to Russia’s war against Ukraine and hopes for a resumption of the negotiation process between the parties.
At the same time , the European Union is exploring the possibility of establishing a direct channel of negotiations with the Kremlin in order to avoid being sidelined in the peace process regarding the war in Ukraine.
