Yevhen Konovalets was returned to Ukraine: he was reburied at a military cemetery

A reburial ceremony for the remains of Colonel of the UNR Army, Commander of the Sich Riflemen, and first head of the OUN, Yevhen Konovalets, took place at the National Military Memorial Cemetery. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participated in the event.

During the ceremony, Zelenskyy called Konovalets’ return to Ukraine a restoration of historical justice and emphasized the importance of the colonel’s figure for Ukrainian history.

According to the president, Konovalets’ fate was both heroic and tragic and reflected the difficult period of Ukraine’s struggle for independence.

Zelensky also noted that Ukraine should return to its homeland other Ukrainian figures and heroes who are currently buried abroad.

“We will do everything to return each and every one of the true Ukrainian heroes to their homeland, step by step,” said the head of state.

The President thanked everyone who has preserved the memory of Konovalets and cared for his burial site over the decades. In particular, he noted the Ukrainian Rifle Community of Canada, the Ukrainian National Union, and other Ukrainian patriots.

The colonel’s remains have been temporarily reburied at the National War Memorial Cemetery. In the future, they are planned to be transferred to the Ukrainian National Pantheon.

It was previously reported that the ashes of Yevhen Konovalets were transported to Ukraine for reburial.

In addition, Ukraine has also received permission to rebury him. Prior to this, the colonel was buried at the Crosswijk Cemetery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
