Video hosting YouTube may acquire rights to broadcast the Oscars.
According to Bloomberg , the rights are currently held by ABC, which has been broadcasting the show for almost half a century and will own the rights until at least 2028.
However, the Academy is already in talks about a new partnership. If the deal goes through, it would be the platform’s biggest move into entertainment content since NFL Sunday Ticket and attempts to acquire rights to other sports broadcasts. For the Academy, it’s a chance to bring back interest in the ceremony, which has been losing viewers in recent years.
In addition to YouTube, Disney, Amazon, and Netflix are also vying for streaming rights. They have their own studios, experience in organizing live broadcasts, and the ability to combine broadcasts with rental releases.
