Zaluzhny does not rule out the possibility of a long-term end to the war as one of the realistic scenarios for ending the conflict
Former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and current Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valeriy Zaluzhny, stated that under the current circumstances, Ukraine should also consider the option of a long-term end to the Russian-Ukrainian war. He wrote this in an article for Liga.net .
According to Zaluzhny, most wars in history don’t have classic endings with a clear victory for one side. He noted that World War II should be viewed as a “rare exception,” as conflicts typically end either in “mutual defeat” or with each side confident of victory.
“When we talk about victory, we must be honest: victory is the collapse of the Russian empire, and defeat is the complete occupation of Ukraine due to its collapse. Everything else is simply a continuation of the war,” Zaluzhny emphasized.
He also noted that even if peace is achieved, while the risk of a new war remains, Ukraine may gain time for political change, deep reforms, large-scale reconstruction, economic growth, and the return of citizens.
At the same time, the diplomat emphasized that one of Ukraine’s key political goals should be depriving Russia of the ability to commit acts of aggression against our state in the foreseeable future.
Zaluzhny previously stated that Ukraine is in an extremely difficult situation, where any talk of imminent peace effectively means only a crushing defeat and loss of independence.
