Zaluzhny’s confession about the counteroffensive: did the authorities admit their mistakes?

The failure of the Ukrainian offensive operations in 2023 was the result of the ineffective use of reserves and excessive publicity of military plans. In addition, the concentration of the most combat-ready units in street battles for Bakhmut exhausted the army.

This opinion was expressed on the air of “Pryamoy” by military-political analyst Dmitry Snegirev.

According to him, Western partners, in particular the United States, advised to concentrate forces exclusively in the Zaporizhia direction.

“You have to be an idiot not to understand that behind every so-called military expert there are at least five Russian special services officers,” Snegirev noted, criticizing the activities of media figures who, long before the start of the operations, drew up plans for offensives on television.

In his opinion, due to such an information policy, the Russian side managed to prepare multi-kilometer minefields and defensive lines, known as the Surovikin Line, so the assault groups found themselves in front of well-prepared enemy positions.

At the same time, Snegirev noted that senior officials now admit to the leak of plans, although they themselves contributed to creating an atmosphere of excessive expectations in society.

The day before, the former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and current Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom Valeriy Zaluzhny stated that the failure of the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian forces in 2023 was due to insufficient allocation of resources by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and other officials.

Zaluzhny also stressed that the success of the operation required a significant buildup of forces and tactical surprise. Instead, Ukrainian troops were scattered over a large territory, which significantly reduced their striking power.
