Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to strengthen cooperation to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea during a meeting in Istanbul on October 31. The parties also agreed to work to maintain the effectiveness of the grain corridor and discussed the prospects for further diplomatic negotiations.
This was reported by the Office of the President.
During the talks in Istanbul, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed issues of global food security, the situation in the Black Sea region, and defense cooperation between Ukraine and Turkey.
Zelenskyy emphasized Turkey’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and the need to guarantee the security of sea routes.
“Turkey consistently supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We discussed steps that will ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea and restore normal living conditions in the region. We also agreed to work to ensure that the grain corridor remains effective,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted that the security situation in the Black Sea was one of the main topics of the meeting. According to him, the escalation of the war is increasing the impact of hostilities on maritime space, creating additional risks for international trade and shipping.
Separately, the parties discussed the possibility of further diplomatic negotiations. Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine is preparing for a trilateral negotiation format and proposes to hold it in Turkey with the involvement of European partners.
The talks also focused on strengthening bilateral partnership, particularly in the defense sector. For Ukraine, security in the Black Sea and stable operation of maritime trade routes remain important areas of cooperation.
It was previously reported that Turkey and the UN are preparing new talks between Ukraine and Russia on a ceasefire in the Black Sea . The agreement is intended to protect grain ships, as well as ports and energy facilities from attacks.
